Anyway, here is my essay Consumerism.
written by: Darkd
Consumerism is a topic that is heavily debated by liberal, and conservative parties. The urban definition of Consumerism is: that personal happiness is equated to the amount of goods purchased. This is not the dictionary definition, but it applies to my point in this case. Consumerism is the main ideology that sustains the economies of most of the 1st word capitalist countries, including the United States. However, even knowing the benefit to the economy, the negative aspects of Consumerism cannot be ignored. Consumerism, while being beneficial to various economies, allows for many negative outcomes such as a corrupted morality, an over-inflated value of currency and material goods, and desensitization with our fellow man.
Out world as we know it is controlled by simple slips of paper that we refer to as currency. Currency to capitalist countries is the greatest treasure you could have in your possession. Not only does it give you access to products and services, but with the more money you obtain, you obtain social power. Holding a position of power is an important thing in society. However, there are individuals who are power hungry, and lust for endless wealth. To acquire this wealth, they exhort money out of the marginal society, which thus requires the marginal society to acquire more money. This a perpetuating cycle, but it seems never ending in capitalist countries as we know them. This lust for goods/wealth has only started to degrade our moral backing. Instead of helping each other with our problems, we are more willing to rip the shirt off their back. This in time, will lead everyone to become selfish, and self-centered.
In today's world, monetary status and materialism are taken very seriously. So seriously in fact that it leads us to believe that money is far more important then it truly is. A world without currency is unfathomable to some, but it is not impossible. This shows that citizens of capitalist countries have an over-inflated value of money. That in order to survive, you must have these slips of paper. All of our activities are based around currency, and without it, it would be very difficult for people to survive. In order to live a comfortable lifestyle, an individual must acquire at least $2000 a month. With all the time taken to earn/manage/spend this money, it must be of great importance. Is that correct? No, money should not be our main focus in life, and shouldn't take the place of community togetherness. With this mass consumption of goods, people only compete with each other over who has the best/most expensive item. We continue to compete in this manner and continue consuming products. This only leads to furthur our importance of currency.
As humanity slowly begins to decay to an even more pathetic state, we grow cold and distant to our fellow man. We forsake our brethren, in order to forward our own ambitions, and desires. We ignore the pain and despair of others, and only look towards our own future.
Consumerism is an economic ideology that allows for the procreation of capitalist society. It is an ideology that has allowed the United States, and many other 1st word countries to reach prosperity. Even though it has created fortune for many, over time the greed will rot us from the inside. Consumerism remains a plague to society, and it is detrimental to human conscious.
